The recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria appears to have intensified internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as conflicting interpretations of its implications continue to generate confusion across party structures, particularly at the grassroots.
At the local level, party stakeholders aligned with the camp believed to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have strongly rejected claims of any leadership change. The Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government PDP Chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Adewale Adebiyi, dismissed reports suggesting a takeover, insisting he remains the duly recognized chairman.
“Who said Bolaji should take over? That is a wrong story. I am the recognized chairman. They are simply spreading falsehood,” Adebiyi stated.
Meanwhile, Wike himself has refuted widespread insinuations that the Supreme Court ruling affirmed the suspension of the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu. According to him, the issue of Anyanwu’s suspension was never before the court for determination, describing such claims as misleading.
Amid these denials, fresh directives attributed to Hon. Rita Orji have further complicated the situation. According to party sources, Orji has reportedly maintained that all ward and local government congresses conducted before the current dispute remain valid. However, she is said to have indicated that only the state congress may require reconsideration, with the possible constitution of a caretaker committee to manage affairs at that level.
In a parallel development, Prince Bolaji Ikandu is reported to have been instructed to resume as the Local Government Area (LGA) Chairman of the party. This emerging twist could significantly alter the local power dynamics within the PDP.
However, a very close source from the former Ajeromi Ifelodun Constituency representative at the House of Reps, Hon Rita Orji, said: “Remember, Paul West led a delegation to Aare Rasak Fakunle’s house(PDP Ajeromi Ifelodun Apex leader) recently to seek recognition after their illegal inauguration, and the elder statesman told them that the Prince Bolaji Ikandu-led LGA Executives remain the authentic Executives till after the Supreme Court judgement”.

These conflicting positions underscore a deepening struggle for legitimacy and control within the party, as various factions continue to interpret the Supreme Court judgment to suit their interests. Political observers warn that the absence of a unified stance may further entrench divisions within the PDP if urgent reconciliation measures are not undertaken.
Attention is now firmly on the party’s leadership at the state and national levels, where critical decisions, particularly regarding the proposed caretaker arrangements, are expected to shape the PDP’s stability and readiness ahead of future electoral contests.
