The lawmaker representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Lukman Sa’ad Olumoh, on Saturday hosted the 35th edition of his annual Ramadan lecture and empowerment programme, distributing cash grants and food palliatives to residents of the constituency.
The event, organised under the platform of the Asson As’ahadat Wai Salamot Prayer Group of Nigeria, attracted prominent dignitaries, religious leaders, and political stakeholders from across Lagos.
Chairing the occasion was the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who commended Olumoh for sustaining the Ramadan initiative for more than three decades, describing it as a valuable platform for promoting moral values, community unity, and social support.
Islamic scholars who delivered lectures at the event emphasised the link between faith, leadership, and social responsibility.
The first lecturer, Imam Nojeem Jimoh, National Amir of The Companion, spoke on “Islamic Injunction and Leadership,” stressing that leadership must be guided by justice, accountability, and adherence to constitutional principles for the overall benefit of society. He also reflected on the evolution of governance, comparing the provision of social amenities, education, healthcare, and security in the past with present realities.
The second lecturer, Sheikh Nurudeen Arowolo Alarape, spoke on “Governance and Social Responsibility,” describing public office as a sacred trust that demands honesty, loyalty, and transparency. He reminded political leaders of the ultimate accountability before God and emphasised that social responsibility must be jointly upheld by both leaders and citizens.
In his remarks, Obasa highlighted the spiritual significance of Ramadan and urged Muslims to uphold the virtues of charity, compassion, and unity.
He also expressed confidence in the reform agenda of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing major national infrastructure initiatives such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the proposed Badagry–Sokoto road corridor as indicators of ongoing economic transformation.
“As we reflect on the teachings of Ramadan, we must continue to demonstrate love, charity, and compassion to those in need,” the Speaker said, while urging constituents to support leaders committed to community development.
As part of the empowerment programme, Olumoh distributed cash grants of N100,000 each to at least 100 beneficiaries to support small businesses and household needs during the fasting period. Food palliatives were also distributed to vulnerable families across the constituency.
Speaking at the event, Olumoh explained that the annual Ramadan lecture was initiated 35 years ago in the lifetime of his father and has since been sustained as a tradition of community service and spiritual reflection.
“This programme is about sharing love and supporting one another, especially during the holy month. It reflects the teaching of Prophet Muhammad that a believer should love for his neighbour what he loves for himself,” he said.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to Obasa, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and President Tinubu for their support and contributions to development efforts within the constituency.
The event drew a large turnout of political leaders, traditional rulers, clerics, and community stakeholders. Among those in attendance were the Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Hon. Olawole Jimoh, and Hon. Olamilekan Akindipe, and other Chairmen alongside former and serving lawmakers.
Others are members of the League of Imams, the Council of Obas, and other royal fathers and Bales.
Community leaders and residents commended Olumoh for sustaining the initiative, noting that the annual lecture and empowerment programme continues to provide both spiritual guidance and practical support to vulnerable members of the community.
