Re-elected District 1 Vice Chairman of the Shipping Federation, Comrade Onyeisi Prince Monye, has issued a strong call to action to seafarers across all the District offices, urging them to align with a shared vision of unity, cooperation, and collective progress as the foundation for a revitalized union.
Framing his message as both a personal desire and a strategic priority, Monye stressed that the strength of the union lies in the ability of its members across units and the districts to work together with a common purpose. He noted that only through genuine collaboration can the union evolve into an institution that truly serves the interests and welfare of all seafarers.
“At the heart of my desire is for all seamen in every unit to come together and make things work, not in isolation, but in synergy with the district. We must consciously build a new union that accommodates everyone and ensures that every member feels represented and valued,” he declared.
Monye’s charge comes at a critical moment for the union, as it seeks to reposition itself following acknowledged challenges in its previous term. While acknowledging that the past administration encountered operational setbacks, he maintained that these experiences have provided valuable lessons that will guide a more effective and inclusive approach as we move forward.

He called on unit chairmen to intensify engagement with maritime companies, emphasizing that proactive relationship-building would unlock better opportunities for members, particularly in the area of job placement.
“I have been encouraging our unit leaders to remain steadfast, to reach out to companies, and to build relationships that will translate into tangible benefits for our members. This is a responsibility we must all take seriously,” he said.
Beyond structural reforms, Monye placed significant emphasis on the need for unity and solidarity within the maritime workforce. He cautioned against division and internal discord, describing them as obstacles to progress, and instead advocated for a culture of mutual respect and collective responsibility.
“We must see ourselves as one family, just as we are at sea. There should be no division, no discrimination. When we stand together, we can rebuild the strength and pride of our union,” he added.
He further assured members that improved coordination among units, districts, and branches would be prioritized in the new term to address past inefficiencies and strengthen the union’s operational framework.
