The Senate has passed a motion directing the Federal Government to ensure mandatory stocking of adequate snake anti-venoms and other essential antidotes in public and private hospitals. This followed a motion moved by Senator Oluranti Idiat Adebule, who was reacting to the preventable death of an Abuja-based singer, Ifunanya Nwangene, as a result of a snake bite.
The Senators were worried over a gap in the nation’s healthcare system, especially the scarcity of anti-venom and the lack of rapid-response infrastructure for poisonous animal encounters in both rural and urban areas.
Ifunanya Nwangene, a 26-year-old former contestant on The Voice Nigeria, died on January 31, 202, due to a lack of anti-venom in two hospitals to treat a snake bite at her residence in Lugbe,
