A former Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Taiwo, fondly known by many as HKT, has built a public life anchored on humility, accessibility, and service without spectacle. For over two decades in public life, he has carried himself with a simplicity that, to some casual observers, was once mistaken for a lack of substance. Yet, for those who truly know his record and character, that simplicity is precisely his strength.

Even while out of elective office, Hon. Taiwo never retreated from the people. Constituents recount how he continues to intervene in house rent issues, family financial interventions, medical challenges, and personal crises, often quietly, without publicity, and sometimes even beyond the boundaries of his constituency. This enduring connection with the grassroots was again on display at the recent end-of-year celebration of the HKT Family and Friends Group, an initiative he has sustained consistently for over 20 years. Beyond being a social gathering, the event subtly but clearly reaffirmed his capacity to mobilise structures, empower the less privileged, and sustain community-focused interventions.

One of the highlights of the event was a Free Medical Outreach, where residents received diagnoses and treatment for various ailments at no cost, an intervention that reinforced his belief that leadership must translate into tangible human impact, and perhaps more touching is the gesture of reaching out to families of his deceased members and doling out financial support to them.

Without grand speeches or political fanfare, Taiwo also quietly addressed a long-standing narrative about his personal life that, after many years in politics, he had “nothing to show.” The group’s end of year event provided a practical rebuttal. Attendees were introduced to a range of operational businesses of the Rt. Hon lawmaker, through which he sustains himself and continues to support others.

From MAJA Water Company (one of his running businesses), which was served throughout the end of year event, to ventures spanning hospitality, logistics, agriculture, shipping, real estate, gaming, and small-scale enterprises, Taiwo demonstrated that his productivity never stopped, even outside the office. Among these businesses are SimTop Ventures, Maiye Lotto, Kolad Hostel, Kolad Farms, TOB Logistics, Bedrock Hotels & Suites (Badagry and Ibeju-Lekki), Standford Hotel, Maiye 459 Enterprises, FolaKaz Shipping Ltd, Mystic Bar, and Kabolag Multi Concepts Ltd.

Remarkably, he continues to balance entrepreneurship with academics, currently pursuing a PhD, further underscoring his disciplined, methodical approach to life. Some observers attribute his quiet lifestyle to his Ibadan roots; others say it reflects his professional training as a statistician—someone who believes in results, not noise.

Born on 18 July 1961, Taiwo Musbau Kolawole grew up in Amukoko, Ajegunle, Lagos State, after being born on Lagos Island. His educational journey, from W.J. David Memorial Baptist School to St. Charles Grammar School, the Federal Polytechnic Bida, the University of Ilorin, and later the University of Ibadan, shaped a man grounded in data, planning, and structure.

Politically, his journey is deeply rooted in grassroots engagement. Beginning in 1999, he served four consecutive terms in the Lagos State House of Assembly (1999–2015), rising to Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker. He chaired several key committees, including Education, Economic Planning and Budget, Environment, Science and Technology, and Hotels and Tourism, roles that broadened his governance experience.

In 2019, following a supplementary election, he was elected to the House of Representatives to represent Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency, polling 36,115 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Mrs. Rita Orji. His tenure further cemented his reputation as a steady, people-focused legislator.

Today, as voices across Ajeromi/Ifelodun grow louder in calling for his return to the National Assembly, the message from the grassroots is clear: leadership is not only about being seen in office, but about being present in people’s lives—before, during, and after power.
