Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) like any other local Government in Lagos has conducted a successful Ward and Local Government Congresses, producing a new set of executives amid what some stakeholders described as a historic show of unity, reconciliation, and renewed purpose.
The Ward Congresses, held simultaneously across all 11 wards on Saturday, September 13, 2025, were widely acclaimed for their peaceful and hitch-free conduct especially as no party member or group has made a counter claim. Party leaders and members hailed the outcome as a turning point for the PDP in the local government, which has been plagued in the past by internal divisions. The Apex Leader of the Elders’ Council, Aare Rasak Fakunle who witnessed both congresses admitted that the processes and “outcome was hundred and ten percent in order”, implying it was faultless and satisfying.
According to the outgoing Publicity Secretary, Hon. Chinedu Ezugha, who played a leading role in communicating the process, the Congress marked “a new chapter in our journey toward reclaiming the trust and mandate of the good people of Ajeromi-Ifelodun.” He praised both winners and losers of the contests for demonstrating maturity and commitment to party unity.
The newly elected executives of the LGA Congress, led by Hon. Bolaji Ikandu, the youngest-ever Chairman of the party in the Local Government, have been charged with the task of consolidating on the renewed spirit of reconciliation and repositioning the PDP as a viable alternative ahead of the next general elections.
Hon. Ezugha, in his yet to occur formal handover as Publicity Secretary, expressed gratitude to stakeholders whose contributions ensured the success of the Congress. He singled out Aare Rasak Fakunle, Leader of the Elder Council; Apostle Mathew Abogunde, the outgoing Chairman; and Chief Anthony, Leader of the Non-Indigenous Community, for their roles in sustaining stability within the party.
Special recognition was also given to the party’s Grand Matron and Local Government Leader, Hon. Barr. Rita Boluwatife Odichinma Orji, whose tireless mediation before and during the Congress was credited with securing the unity that made the event possible. Party members described her leadership as “a new standard for internal party democracy in the locality.”
While acknowledging that some defections had occurred in recent months, PDP leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening party structures, rebuilding trust among members, and working together to dislodge the ruling APC, which they accused of bringing “untold hardship” to the people.
Hon. Ezugha urged any aggrieved members to put aside differences and rally behind the new executives. He further advised the incoming team to “be magnanimous in victory and hit the ground running,” emphasizing that their leadership would be pivotal to restoring confidence among voters and repositioning the PDP for victory.
The Congress, party leaders agreed, has laid a strong foundation for unity and collective purpose. As the PDP in Ajeromi-Ifelodun enters this new phase, hopes are high that the chapter will emerge stronger and more united in the battle to reclaim the mandate of its people.
