The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), SEAFARERS BRANCH has announced a new collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to provide basic training courses for young Nigerians seeking careers at sea.
According to the Special Female Representative, Comrade Goodnews Sarah, and the enthusiastic leaders of the Seafarers Branch of the Union’s Youth Group, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the current leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under President-General Comrade Francis Bunu (PG 001), to enhance the welfare and professional development of Nigerian seafarers.
The training program targets youths between the ages of 18 and 35 who are registered members of the Seamen Branch of MWUN. Quotas have been allocated to unionized maritime companies and affiliated units to ensure equitable participation.
Union officials described the partnership as a “transformational step” that will open fresh opportunities for new entrants into the maritime sector. They commended NIMASA for its continued collaboration in advancing human capital development in Nigeria’s blue economy.
Since assuming office six months ago, the MWUN President-General has reportedly implemented several reforms across the union’s departments, focusing on unity, transparency, and member welfare.
In a message to members, Nigeria Shipping Federation Seamen Group leaders praised the program as “a testimony to the benevolent and unbiased leadership style” of the current administration.
They urged all eligible members to take advantage of the training, which is expected to enhance employability, safety awareness, and professional standards among Nigerian seafarers.
In another development,The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) reaffirms its commitment to collaboration and peaceful labor relations within the maritime sector following a strategic meeting with the management of Comet Shipping Agencies Nigeria Ltd.
During the meeting, MWUN President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, engaged with the company’s leadership , Mr. Rigo Nazzari, Mr. Jaysing Kamthe, Mr. Andrew Grayson, and Mr. Augustine Osiughwu , to discuss ways to enhance partnership and sustain industrial harmony across the maritime industry.
Comrade Abi commended the management of Comet Shipping Agencies for their proactive approach and dedication to maintaining a conducive, progressive workplace environment.
He reiterated MWUN’s unwavering commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and shared progress, emphasizing that strong labor-management relations are vital to the continued growth and stability of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
