The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), through its Dockworkers Branch, has officially inaugurated a new unit under the Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL) in Apapa, Lagos.
The inauguration ceremony, held recently at the Union’s National Secretariat, 119 Osho Drive, Olodi-Apapa, was attended by leaders of MWUN, including members of the Seafarers’ Branch who came in solidarity with the ABTL dockworkers.

Head of Media, MWUN, the newly elected executives of the unit sworn in at the event include Comrade Adebayo Ayodele (Chairman), Chibuzor Uruakpa (Vice Chairman), Ganiyu Olumuyiwa (Secretary), and Sunday John (Assistant Secretary).
Others are Comrade Samuel O. Bassey (Treasurer), Destiny Oliseh (Organizing Secretary), Chigozie Nwabani (Assistant Organizing Secretary), and Chukwudi Obialor (Ex-Officio).
Speaking during the inauguration, the leadership of MWUN urged the new officers to conduct themselves with integrity both within and outside the workplace. They stressed that the image of the union is tied to the conduct of its members, and as such, executives must remain diligent, disciplined, and exemplary in character.
The union congratulated the officers, reminding them that protecting the reputation of MWUN is paramount.
Meanwhile, in another development, tension appears to be rising within some sections of the union over claims that certain leaders are pushing to retain elderly officers for a second tenure against repeated promises by the President General that he is bent on restructuring the Districts with active and performing Chairmen of People’s choice . Critics allege that this move contradicts earlier assurances from the President-General that only active unit leaders would be considered for higher positions within the branch executive.
Reacting to the speculation, some younger members of the union have expressed dissatisfaction, insisting that such a development, if true, would amount to reneging on promises of inclusivity and renewal in leadership.
