The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has assured passengers, stakeholders, and the general public that safety remains the Authority’s overriding priority following an incident that triggered emergency firefighting operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
Addressing members of the media at the airport, Kuku disclosed that FAAN immediately activated all necessary firefighting and safety protocols in response to the situation. She noted that emergency response teams were promptly deployed and worked in close coordination to contain the incident and minimize disruption to flight operations.
According to her, the swift activation of the airport’s Emergency Operations Centre underscores FAAN’s preparedness and the effectiveness of its established safety procedures.
“Safety is the bedrock of aviation,” Kuku emphasized, reiterating the Authority’s commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding infrastructure, and maintaining operational integrity at the nation’s airports.
While acknowledging that some international flights, including services operated by British Airways and Emirates, experienced temporary diversions as a precautionary measure, the FAAN boss stressed that such decisions were taken strictly in line with global aviation safety standards.
“These operational adjustments, though inconvenient, are necessary when passenger safety is involved,” she said.
