Okoya Community and its environs erupted in celebration on 29 September as electricity supply was restored by the Power Holding Authority, ending a blackout that lasted one month and two days after the ill-fated electrocution mishap.
At exactly 4:55 p.m., when power was restored, residents—young and old—shouted for joy, with some dancing in the streets in relief and excitement. Jubilant screams, songs, and embraces marked the end of their long wait.
It will be recalled that power supply to Okoya and neighboring communities was cut off after live cables in front of No. 50 Bale Aiyetoro Street snapped and tragically killed a young man who was due to wed in two weeks. The incident forced authorities to shut down supply for safety reasons.
During the blackout, homes and businesses were plunged into darkness. Information from electricity officials was scarce, while unconfirmed reports suggested the repair works might drag on for several months. Residents lamented the hardship, citing high costs of generator fuel, disruption of businesses, and the strain on students and artisans.
“The blackout really destabilized us. We spent so much on fuel just to keep going,” one resident recalled. Another, speaking moments after power was restored, said: “We are so happy — we were told it would take much longer. After all this suffering, to see light again… it’s a relief beyond words.”
Officials of the Power Holding Authority explained that technical teams worked to replace faulty cables, repair damaged lines, and complete safety checks before re-energizing the network.
While the restoration has brought immense relief, residents expressed hope that supply would now be stable and free from the kind of hazards that caused the tragic incident.
“The light is back and we are grateful, but what we want now is steady power and friendlier billing,” another resident said.
