The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the rationale behind the dates announced in its recently released Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, following public concerns over the timing of the polls.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the Commission said the timetable was carefully developed in strict compliance with constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act, 2022, and its Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.
INEC explained that its election regulations, in force since 2019, already prescribe when general elections are to be held. Citing Paragraph 2 of the Regulations, the Commission noted that presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and state assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.
Accordingly, the electoral body fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls.
Despite this legal framework, INEC acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances.
The Commission assured Nigerians that it remains responsive to legitimate concerns that could affect voter participation and the overall conduct of the elections.
“As part of our commitment to inclusivity and credible elections, the Commission is undertaking consultations and may, where necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the issues raised, while ensuring compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements,” the statement indicated.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and credible electoral processes, assuring the public that any further developments or adjustments would be formally communicated.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, and dated February 13, 2026.
