The Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has officially launched the Ifelodun Safety Corps, a community-based security initiative established through the newly enacted Ifelodun Safety Corps Bye-Law No. 7 of 2025.
Speaking during the formal commissioning ceremony, the Leader of the 6th Legislative House of Ifelodun LCDA, Hon. Ilesanmi Elijah Oluwatosin (Ward F), commended the Executive Chairman for his commitment to grassroots governance and his proactive leadership in strengthening community safety.
Hon. Ilesanmi praised the Chairman’s administration for creating an environment of “peace, love, and understanding,” which he said had enabled effective governance and the implementation of people-oriented policies.
According to the new bye-law, the Ifelodun Safety Corps is designed to provide prompt safety and security surveillance across communities within the council area. The initiative aims to complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force, the military, and other security agencies in ensuring the protection of lives and property.
Citing provisions from Sections 4(2), 13, and 14 subsection 2(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended), the Lagos State Local Government Administrative Guidelines (Section 7) as well as the Ifelodun LCDA Bye Law 2025 under which Ifelodun Safety Corps Bye Law Number 7,2025 was Promulgated, Hon. Ilesanmi explained that the establishment of the corps aligns with both constitutional and state directives on local government responsibilities.
He further stated that the corps would recruit personnel from authorized vigilante groups, the Nigerian Legion, paramilitary organizations, and retired security officers. This, he noted, would enhance community policing and foster cooperation among various security stakeholders.
Under the bye-law, the Executive Chairman of Ifelodun LCDA has the authority to establish and operate the corps. Leadership appointments within the organization are subject to confirmation by the Legislative Arm of the council.
Hon. Ilesanmi emphasized that the initiative reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring “zero-tolerance for security lapses” and providing a safer environment for residents in the multi-ethnic communities that make up the LCDA.
“Through the establishment of the Ifelodun Safety Corps, our council is taking a bold step in complementing state and federal efforts toward the protection of lives and property,” he stated.
He concluded his address with a call for unity and cooperation among residents, praying for continued peace and progress in Nigeria, Lagos State, and the Ifelodun LCDA.
