…decries outage has crippled businesses
Residents of Okoya, Aiyetoro and environs have raised strong concerns over a prolonged power outage, petitioning the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) to urgently restore supply to their community.
In a formal letter signed by community representative Onyinyechi Phillips, the residents described the blackout as “deeply distressing,” stressing that it had disrupted daily life, crippled businesses, and imposed severe hardship on households. The petition urged EKEDP to treat the matter as a priority, noting that residents have endured weeks without electricity.
In its response, EKEDP acknowledged the complaint and tendered an apology for the inconvenience. “We acknowledge the distress and inconvenience this has caused and apologize for the power outage,” the company stated in an email signed by its Customer Care representative, Adebayo.
The company assured residents that its technical team was aware of the problem and working to resolve it. “Please be assured that our dedicated support team is aware of the issue, and the issue is being addressed. We will revert accordingly,” EKEDP added.
While the company’s assurances have been noted, residents insist that words must now be matched with swift action, as prolonged outages continue to erode confidence in the electricity provider’s ability to deliver reliable service.
The situation has underscored broader concerns over the reliability of power supply in the region, with affected households and businesses waiting anxiously for a lasting solution.
Just recently, Former Labour Party House of Reps aspirant in the last general election and now an ADC Chieftain in Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Emilia Ezeude expressed sympathy to families affected by the electrocution incident that claimed a live and injured several others in the area and called for urgent need for proactive safety measures to safeguard lives within communities.
Several notable residents had appealed to the electricity company complaining of the adverse impact of the prolonged outage on their businesses. A legal practitioner, Barrister Bright Obaduemu noted that the blackout has disrupted both economic and social life, appealing to authorities to intervene because, “Electricity is central to pricing commodities and services. Now, even cold drinks attract extra charges. This problem has become endemic,” he said.
Obaduemu appealed, the intervention should not be left for one tier of government alone. Everyone must play their part.”
