Nigeria’s 65th birthday is a milestone worth celebrating, but the mood is tempered by the stark realities on the ground. As I engaged with Nigerians from various walks of life, a majority expressed their disappointment and frustration with the current state of affairs under President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The economy, in particular, is a major concern. Many Nigerians feel that the government has not done enough to address the economic quagmire, with rising costs of living, unemployment, and poverty remaining pervasive issues. The removal of fuel subsidies, for instance, has been a contentious topic, with some arguing that it has exacerbated the economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Corruption is another issue that continues to plague the country. Despite President Tinubu’s promises to tackle corruption, many Nigerians feel that not enough has been done to address this scourge. The perception is that corruption remains endemic, with politicians and those in positions of power often accused of embezzlement and other forms of malfeasance.
The security situation in Nigeria is also a major worry. The continuous killing and banditry have created a sense of insecurity and fear among Nigerians. Many feel that the government has not done enough to address these security challenges, and that more needs to be done to protect lives and property.
Despite these challenges, President Tinubu remains optimistic about Nigeria’s future. In his Independence Day address, he highlighted several economic milestones achieved by his administration, including a stabilized foreign exchange market, a trade surplus, and an increase in non-oil revenue . However, for many Nigerians, these achievements are yet to translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives.
As Nigeria celebrates its 65th birthday, it is clear that there is still much work to be done. The government must listen to the concerns of Nigerians and work towards addressing the economic, security, and corruption challenges that face the country. Only then can Nigeria truly fulfill its potential and provide a better life for its citizens.
