A Ghanaian businessman based in Lagos, Louis Oppong, has said that Nigeria can experience rapid development and a strong economic presence in Africa if the country can deal with the issue of ethnic bigotry.
“I believe that when you have love, it breaks a lot of things. If there’s nothing like discrimination, the country will stand better. Nigerians don’t have love because if there is, you cannot say this one is from this tribe or the other tribe. In Ghana, we call ourselves brothers, you don’t say he is from North or South while they are living in the same country. Why should there be discrimination? With love and togetherness, Nigeria can stand better.”
He noted the issue of ethnic bigotry as a major one, which politicians have used to polarise the people and create hatred among them. In Ghana, he noted, nobody knows which region you are from, and as far as they are concerned, everyone is a Ghanaian first before thinking of where you were born.
For him, it’s love that can propel this country to greatness. Nigerians need to discard their differences and see themselves as brothers first.
