A fresh wave of political activity is rippling through Lagos State as supporters of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode take to social media and grassroots platforms to push for his return in 2027.
On Sunday, a coalition under the banner Ambode Comeback Crusaders released an open letter addressed to the National Chairman and Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The letter, signed by convener Abiodun S. Fashola, passionately appealed to the party leadership to endorse Ambode as APC’s candidate for the next gubernatorial election.
The letter praised Ambode’s record during his 2015–2019 tenure, highlighting achievements in infrastructure renewal, public transportation, and healthcare reforms. It further credited his financial management skills with strengthening Lagos as an economic powerhouse and raising its global reputation.
“Ambode’s vision for Lagos continues to resonate with citizens, promoting inclusivity and sustainability,” the letter read. “By endorsing his return, we can harness his experience and dedication to propel Lagos into a new era of prosperity and innovation.”
The appeal has since gained traction online, with hashtags and supportive comments flooding social media platforms. In response to the campaign, one supporter wrote: “By God’s grace 2027 is for Ambode,” while another declared: “All we are saying, give us Ambode again.”
Observers note that the groundswell of support marks Ambode’s most visible political re-entry since his exit from office in 2019, after he was denied a second-term ticket by the ruling APC. His successor, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, secured re-election earlier this year, deepening questions about the party’s possible direction in 2027.
Though the APC leadership has not formally responded to the open letter, the campaign has ignited discussions across Lagos’ political circles. Analysts suggest the movement could test the internal dynamics of the APC in the state, particularly its long-standing tradition of candidate selection driven by powerful party structures.
For now, Ambode’s supporters remain undeterred. Their rallying cry — “All we are saying, give us Ambode again” — signals a growing appetite for his return, one that could reshape the political conversation in Lagos as 2027 draws nearer.
