The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the nomination of candidates for six legislative seats across the state following the disruption and cancellation of primary elections in some constituencies.
In a letter dated May 30, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the party’s Lagos State Electoral Committee, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Sanni, the NDC said it was compelled to adopt replacement candidates after primary elections could not be successfully conducted in parts of Lagos due to security challenges and other logistical issues.
According to the letter signed by the Lagos State Chairman of the party, King Okuneye, primary elections for the House of Assembly seat in Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I were disrupted by alleged attacks by thugs on Friday, May 29, leading to the failure of the exercise.
The party further claimed that reports submitted by returning officers from affected constituencies implicated some political actors in the disruption of the electoral process. It specifically mentioned allegations involving the member representing Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency, Hon. Geye George, and Hon. Osafile Folake Stella, although details of the allegations were not immediately available.
The NDC also disclosed that primary elections could not hold in Oshodi-Isolo Constituency I and Eti-Osa Constituency I due to similar challenges.
To ensure compliance with electoral deadlines and facilitate the submission of candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party approved a list of aspirants to fly its flag in the affected constituencies.
For the Lagos State House of Assembly elections, the party nominated Imolede Josiah Ibukun for Surulere Constituency II, Tiamiyu Jamiu Olatunde for Oshodi-Isolo Constituency I, and Thomas Victor for Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I.
For the House of Representatives elections, the NDC named Umuadi Emmanuel Azubike for Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency, Augustine Oluwasesi Clement for Surulere Federal Constituency II, and Thaddeus Atta Achief for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency.
The party said the nominations were necessary to fill vacant positions arising from the inability to conduct primaries in the affected constituencies and urged the electoral committee to approve the recommendations to enable the timely upload of candidates’ names to INEC.
The development comes amid heightened political activities across Lagos as parties conclude their candidate selection processes ahead of the forthcoming general elections. The NDC has maintained that the decisions were taken in the interest of the party and to avoid losing the opportunity to field candidates in the affected constituencies.
