Residents of Okoya, Aiyetoro, Bara, and surrounding communities have expressed excitement as the Electricity Distribution Company of Power (EKDP) resumed repair works on faulty electricity cables. The outage, which followed a tragic electrocution incident two weeks ago, had plunged the neighborhoods into prolonged darkness.
Electricity workers were seen at four repair points on Saturday, drawing the attention of residents—particularly business operators—who gathered in anticipation of power restoration. The repair works covered the transformer step-down point at 11 Okoya Street, high-tension lines along the same axis, Opaleye Junction where faulty cables were replaced, Bara Junction, and the electricity junction between Nos. 50 and 52 Aiyetoro Road—the site of the fatal accident.
It would be recalled that a young man lost his life at the front of 50 Aiyetoro street when a live cable snapped and fell on him as he returned home from a social outing. The deceased, who was reportedly due to wed in two weeks, left behind a pregnant fiancée. Another victim of the same incident is still receiving treatment, after being transferred from Tolu Hospital to another hospital with support from EKDP.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Imam S. Muhammed, First Vice Chairman of the Aiyetoro Community Development Association, described the repair works as a welcome relief.
“We are hopeful that power will soon be restored after such a long outage that has disrupted businesses and created hardships for households,” he said. “We are, however, saddened by the tragic loss of life. Contrary to rumors, EKDP responded swiftly by first consoling the bereaved family, then inspecting the faulty cables, and today they have commenced serious repair works.”
Officials of EKDP have assured residents that electricity supply will be restored in the coming week once ongoing repairs are completed.
